Biography

Dr. Raimonda Žiūkaitė (b. 1991) is a Lithuanian composer based between Vilnius and Salzburg. Raimonda graduated from National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art as a choir conductor, 2010-2016 earned her bachelor and master degrees in composition at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (Prof. R. Kabelis composition class). In 2012 she studied at University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna as an Erasmus student (Detlev Mueller-Siemens composition class). 2016-2020 she was pursuing a doctor’s degree in composition at Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre under the guidance of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mārtiņš Viļums and Prof. Habil. Dr. Gražina Daunoravičienė and successfully defended her thesis “Neo-Riemannian Interpretation of Triads and the Perspective of Its Transformation into a Composing System” thus gaining the Doctor of Arts degree. 2018-2020 she was also studying electronic music composition (postgraduate) at Mozarteum University Salzburg with Achim Bornhoeft.
Currently she is living in Berlin, where she studies composition of experimental music theatre at University of Arts Berlin.

Moreover, Raimonda also participated in numerous workshops and masterclasses, such as Lucerne Festival Academy 2022, ARCO Academy 2021, Stuttgart Masterclasses for Vocal Art and New Music Theatre (2020); impuls Academy 2019, Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music 2018, SoCCoS micro-residence at CTM festival in Berlin (2016), N+ ECA Network Intensive Course “Choreographer/Dancer and Composer/ Musician, a Collaborative Platform” (2014); Donaueschinger Musiktage “Next Generation” and Nordplus IP “Process”(2012), where she had lessons with such composers as Brian Ferneyhough, Clara Iannotta, Dmitri Kourliandski, Kirsten Reese etc.

Her compositions were performed in Lithuania, Austria, Luxembourg, Mexico, France and Germany; at choral music competition “Vox Juventutis” (2011, won 3rd Prize), International Accordion festival in Vilnius (2013), electronic music competition “Eikkk” (2013), International Contemporary Music festivals "IV Encuentro Revueltas Sonoras, Intersticios" (Mexico, 2019), eviMus (Germany, 2019), “impuls” (Austria, 2019), “Druskomanija” (Lithuania, 2014-2019) and “Crossroads” (Austria, 2017, 2019). The performers of her compositions include prominent Lithuanian collectives: Vilnius municipal choir “Jauna muzika“; string quartet „Chordos“; St. Christofer chamber orchestra; Lithuanian Youth symphony orchestra; as well as ŒNM - Österreichisches Enesemble Für Neue Musik and guitars ensemble „The Interstring Project“. The piece for string quartet “Prime Galaxy” was selected to represent Lithuania in the International Rostrum of Composers 2014 (under-30 category) and “Chromatografija” for 8 accordions was included into the CD “Anthology of Lithuanian Art Music in the 21st Century”, curated by Frank J. Oteri (2017).

Raimonda is also active as a performer in her theatrical performances and is collaborating with visual artists for audio-visual installations, such as: “White” (Stuttgart 2020),“Extremely Happy to Announce” (Karlsruhe 2019), “They” (Darmstadt 2018), “Laume” (Schmiede Hallein 2019).

In addition, R. Žiūkaitė has written numerous concert reviews and texts about contemporary music, published in Lithuanian magazines „Literatūra ir menas“, „Muzikos antena“, lrytas.lt.

In 2021 she was awarded a yearly scholarship (Jahresstipendium) from Salzburg Land.
